Lowriders — customized cars modified to drive as close to the ground as possible, sometimes with the help of lowered suspensions or hydraulics — have been around since the 1940s. The customized cars, which became popular with Chicano youths, often include detailed paint jobs. Those outfitted with hydraulics might ride down the street on cruise night, then lift one corner up with the flip of a switch or bounce down the street to the delight of spectators.

For some in the lowrider community, the law — which goes into effect Jan. 1 — is a recognition of both their artistic expression and a car culture that for years has been outlawed. If cruise events were not an option, then car shows in parking lots and meet-ups were planned. Polanco said the bans have had a chilling effect that has to be overcome. They effectively isolated members from the community, he said, noting that he gave up cruising when he became a father because he couldn’t afford the risk of traffic tickets.

We have some large events posted in the magazine that are for profit, and we appreciate that they do spend money to help support the publication. Well over 95% of the listings are for smaller events that help out church missions, pet rescues, cancer research and even scholarships. We try to list what charity each one supports. Over the 15 years of doing this, millions and millions of dollars have been collected and donated to a charity from show promoters. Please do yourself a favor and ask where the money is going the next time you go to one of these smaller events.
Arellano would meet other lowrider owners on cruise nights, making lasting friends. She got involved in one of the first women’s car clubs in San Diego, the Specials. So when cruising was banned, she felt her community was being erased. Cruise Nights at Willow Creek Community Church starts on May 27 and continues every fourth Monday of the month until September 23 hosted by the CARS Ministry of Willow Creek Church. Please pay close attention to the "Red Shirt" Parking Volunteers. They will direct you to the show field parking areas. Westmont Cruisn' Nights starts June 6 and continues weekly through August from 5pm - 9pm in downtown Westmont. Three blocks of downtown Westmont closed off and dedicated to classic car parking. Enjoy live music in a family atmosphere.
St. Charles Rd and Main St. Downtown Lombard celebrates 25 years of the family-friendly fun at the weekly Saturday Cruise Nights and Summer Concert Series from June 15 through August 24. Cruise Nights on the River takes place from 5pm - 8pm on Wednesday,June 9 and Wednesday, August 7 at Riverfront Park. The event is hosted by the Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department. Preregistration is not required. Day-of-show registration is free.
Additional parking is available to the rear of the Wurlitzer and Irr property across the street from the Walmart parking lot. Monday Night Cruise-In Car Show 5pm - 9pm begins Monday, June 3 and continues every Monday until August 26. Classic, vintage, antique and muscle cars/trucks 25 years or older are welcome. If you have a newer muscle, high performance, specialty car or truck, it is also allowed if unique.
Several times during the cruise season we offer raffle tickets for special prizes donated by sponsors. There is NO cost to our visitors. Visitors, those not entering a car in the show field are asked to park on the blacktopped portion of the Wurlitzer and Irr Properties.
